Peeling the Onion: Revelation 22:10-21

Now what?

Meanwhile….

People will be people –

Which kind will you be?

Are you preparing yourself,

To be a fit citizen of this city,

Or building up a workload,

Of all that you’ll have to repent?

Clothing yourself

In these linens,

not luxury finery,

Sartor resartus

Is about being all you were made to be,

And doing all you were made to do

Some are tuck outside the gates,

Not yet approved,

Not yet ready to enter

With lots of reformation required

But that’s not a linear time sentence

Rather, acknowledgement

of what doesn’t fit the big picture

I personally think

The closing threats are tacked on,

And likely the extra invitations

But the vision seems complete

I don’t think pages were lost….

Moderns think life’s a problem to be solved –

What if it’s a mystery to be suffered and celebrated?

What will you do with this revelation?

NJB Epilogue

10 This, too, he said to me, 'Do not keep the prophecies in this book a secret, because the Time is close.

11 Meanwhile let the sinner continue sinning, and the unclean continue to be unclean; let the upright continue in his uprightness, and those who are holy continue to be holy.

12 Look, I am coming soon, and my reward is with me, to repay everyone as their deeds deserve.

13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

14 Blessed are those who will have washed their robes clean, so that they will have the right to feed on the tree of life and can come through the gates into the city.

15 Others must stay outside: dogs, fortune-tellers, and the sexually immoral, murderers, idolaters, and everyone of false speech and false life.'

16 I, Jesus, have sent my angel to attest these things to you for the sake of the churches. I am the sprig from the root of David and the bright star of the morning.

17 The Spirit and the Bride say, 'Come!' Let everyone who listens answer, 'Come!' Then let all who are thirsty come: all who want it may have the water of life, and have it free.

18 This is my solemn attestation to all who hear the prophecies in this book: if anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him every plague mentioned in the book;

19 if anyone cuts anything out of the prophecies in this book, God will cut off his share of the tree of life and of the holy city, which are described in the book.

20 The one who attests these things says: I am indeed coming soon. Amen; come, Lord Jesus.

21 May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with you all. Amen.

NSRV Epilogue

10 And he said to me, ‘Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near.

11Let the evildoer still do evil, and the filthy still be filthy, and the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy.’

12 ‘See, I am coming soon; my reward is with me, to repay according to everyone’s work.

13I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.’

14 Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they will have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city by the gates.

15Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and fornicators and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practises falsehood.

16 ‘It is I, Jesus, who sent my angel to you with this testimony for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.’

17 The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come.’ And let everyone who hears say, ‘Come.’ And let everyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who wishes take the water of life as a gift.

18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this book;

19if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away that person’s share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.

20 The one who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all the saints. Amen.
